To increase the organized capacity of people to care for one another through the support of local United Way Agencies.
The National United Way movement began as a combined effort of religious and charitable organizations in 1887. The Jefferson County United Way began as The Community Chest of Steubenville in 1931. It was organized by the leaders of the Steubenville Chamber of Commerce to address Depression-era needs through the support of ten local agencies. The campaign goal that first year was an amazing $80,000! As time changed, in 1976 the Community Chest became the Steubenville Area United Way, and in 1983 a merger occurred with another name change to the United Way of Jefferson County.
That merger resulted in the Toronto Community Chest and the Mingo Community Chest becoming grandfather agencies of the United Way of Jefferson County. Today there are approximately 1400 United Ways nationwide. Historically United Way has become a staple to thousands of communities across the country with a strong reputation as being the leading fundraising organization in the United States.
United Way is also known for achieving lasting results that tackle our community's most pressing issues at hand. Traditionally United Way has been known as a workplace fundraising organization with high visibility and community respect. The United Way of Jefferson County currently helps support 19 member agencies and programs through monthly allocation distributions. We depend on hundreds and hundreds of volunteers each and every year to reach this goal and assist the ever growing number of persons in need in Jefferson County.
